Our History

- 1830 – Protestant Episcopal Faith was evident, meeting in homes, courthouse and public buildings.
- 1861 – Col. George Gordon of Huntsville, Alabama, began a mission to form the Protestant Episcopal Church in Athens, Alabama. The War Between the States interrupted this task, but he returned from battle and resumed his work with the purchase of the present day site of the church for $800 in 1869.
- 1860’s -70’s – Services continued in various places, principally in the upper story of William A. Hine’s brick store-house; the latter location, through lease, became c 1879 the Episcopal Church (Mason Hall).
- 1867-1870 – The first rector, the Rev. Thomas Beard, called the struggling parish his “Little Timothy,” thus
- the birth of St. Timothy’s Mission, Athens, Alabama.
- 1867 – The first recorded baptism was of infant Charles C. Lucas.
- 1870 –The church held its first recorded meeting to ascertain financial status and form a building committee.
- 1877 – The church elected its first vestrymen and officers.
- 1880 – The first church building was erected on the present site.
- 1905 – 1949 These were difficult years, city assessments, falling communicant strength and the great depression forced the Diocese to mortgage the church. In 1944 the mortgage was paid, and the church began a period of rebuilding.
- 1955 – The Parish House (McManis Hall) was constructed.
- 1965-1967 – The church was condemned as unsafe, the soft brick having succumbed to the picturesque ivy scaling its walls. In August 1967, the common room of the Parish house was arranged for services, wherein they continued until the new church was completed.
- 1968 – Demolition was completed and the site made ready for the new church. Ground-breaking services were held July 28th.
- 1969– The first service was held in the new church on January 12.
- 1990 – The land with its buildings next to McManis Hall was acquired.
- 2000-2001 –September 29, 2001, the garden with its Celtic cross was dedicated.
- 2002 –The Rev. Jerrilee P. Lewallen, blessed the newly refurbished Parish House as part of a Sunday service.
